Another exciting day. The bailout bill is being voted on in the House of Representatives, and at the moment it's in trouble, with most Republicans voting against has failed. Meanwhile, the Dow has dropped over 500 points.
You'd think House Republicans must get behind this in the end. I wonder if this is an effort to save face by showing initial reluctance.
Fantastic project - the Great Schlep [via Rock the Bubbe Vote]. In an effort to win Florida, young Jewish people are asked to visit their grandparents in south Florida, to persuade them to overcome their misgivings about Obama.
That said, Halperin's scorecard gives Obama A-, McCain B-, and immediate post-debate polling gave Obama the win.
We'll see what storyline emerges today. Some could have been turned off by McCain's barely veiled contempt for Obama, others will be impressed that McCain was more forceful. Perhaps the most likely outcome is that taken in isolation, this debate will not be decisive.
The Page reports that the debate will go ahead. McCain is travelling to Mississippi, releasing a statement that:
Campaign statement: “He is optimistic that there has been
significant progress toward a bipartisan agreement now that there is a
framework for all parties to be represented in negotiations, including
Representative Blunt as a designated negotiator for House Republicans.”
It's not clear exactly what has changed - perhaps this just signifies that House Republicans are willing to make a deal.
